Poker Tips From Our Pro

JBGenerally slow playing trips will cost you money, particularly in the lower limit games. Too many players call with those suited cards and small connectors. If you check the set on the flop, you are allowing them a free shot to beat you. You should usually bet it out. If they fold and you win a small pot, it is not a loss. Slow playing is appropriate but you should pick your spots carefully. Here is a rule that will usually keep you out of trouble. If the board has a straight draw or flush draw, bet or raise immediately. No smooth calls here. If the board is a rainbow and no real straight draws, then consider slow playing your trips. So the General Rule is: Never slow play trips. The Exception is: When the board is rather innocuous, slow play the set and build a big pot.
