Killer Poker Online

Killer Poker Online : Crushing the Internet Game

John Vorhaus

I find Vorhaus a rather entertaining poker author, and this book is no exception. This is one of the first books directed at online poker, and Vorhaus does a good job of defining the arena. He identifies the problems and pitfalls of playing in the privacy of one's home, and gives some good suggestions on how to avoid them. The chapters on record keeping are invaluable, and worth the price of the book, although if you follow his suggestions you will spend a lot of time keeping your records.

Anyone that has watched the news recently has heard an American Army officer comment on shaping the battlefield. Well this book will help you to shape your poker battlefield for success. If you're a B&M player that has problems playing online, or an online player that seems to have reached their level of incompetence, the useful concepts in this book should help to get you over the hump.

A better name for this book might be No Fold'em Hold'em for Fun and Profit. This book specifically addresses that particular style of play. Although not one of the best Hold'em books, because of this specialization, it might be very helpful to anyone that plays low-level poker online. At the micro-limits and low limits, the online games and No Fold'em Hold'em are the similar. Any Ace will call to the river. The attitude that any two cards can win permeates the game. Any two flush cards or connectors will see the flop, and if the flop helps all of the draws go to river.

Pocket Aces are just another pair if they aren't helped on the flop, and a single pair seldom wins a show down at the river. Only in Europe have I seen wilder Hold'em games. "Winning Low Limit Poker," Identifies some of the strategy modifications that have to be made to beat these loose and wild games. If you have ever said, "I can beat good players, but bad players always draw out on me." You need to read this book.

Lou Krieger

Okay, who is really going to go out and buy this book, or if they do, admit to it? Lou Krieger supplies most of the poker content for this book and he is arguably the best poker author today. His books may not have the in depth analysis of Sklansky, but you don't need a degree in mathematics to understand them either. If you have been winning at "casino/online" poker for a couple of years this book probably won't give you any insights. If you are a new player or a player that has been losing for years, this book should improve your game. It is written for the novice, and tends to be directed at B&M casino poker, and not Internet poker.

Still, if you have only been playing online at the micro limit games, (even if you have been winning) this book might be of value to you. I've known low level players in Las Vegas and California that eked out a living playing in the low limit games by following a set of standard rules, but really had no idea how poker could be played. They really did not know how to play the game. This book won't give you all of the answers but it will show you some questions you probably have never considered. I think you will find some concepts here very enlightening. Besides, you can always hide it under the bed.

Tells are generally considered the part of the B&M or home live game, not applicable to online play, but this was one of the first and best books on the workings of a poker players mind. We may not be able to see the player physically (thank goodness, as too many play in a state of undress) but the situations that Caro describes in his book are still applicable. You just have to look for other indications of the state mind. Is he in a hurry, what do his betting patterns indicate, etc?

You would be surprised what you can learn by watching your computer monitor and the chat box. Additionally, sooner or later you will go to a B&M casino and play in a live game. I suggest you reread the "Book of Tells" before you do. You might not win any more money but you definitely won't lose as much. When I bought it years ago, it paid for itself the first night and I still reread it when I get the opportunity to play in a live game.

Just 15 years ago, you hardly ever found a No-Limit or Pot-Limit poker game. Limit poker prevailed in most poker rooms, except the very largest, even in Las Vegas . With the advent of Internet poker, and the televised shows, World Series of Poker and the World Poker Tour, many players only play No-Limit. Additionally most Internet poker tournaments are the No-limit structure. Otherwise the time constraints would preclude most normal people, with real jobs, from playing.

This book is not the best book on Big Bet poker but it has some great advice on the play of a couple of the biggest problem hands in Hold'em - Ace, King and small pocket pairs. Actually the authors disagree over how to play both, but their discussion of the advantages of their style of play will allow the reader to make their own decision on which style best fits their attitude or inclination. If you play tournaments online, this book is a good and informative read.
